IGAD Breaks Silence On Ruto-RSF Meeting, Flags Support Letter

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has debunked a press statement implying that it supports President William Ruto’s intention to welcome Rapid Support Forces (RSF) officers in Nairobi.

“The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) wishes to clarify that it has not issued any official press release concerning the ongoing Ramadan peace process,” IGAD noted in a statement.

“Any statements attributed to IGAD on this matter should be verified through our official communication channels. We urge media and the public to rely on IGAD’s verified platforms for accurate information.”

The comment came after a bogus press release headlined “IGAD Commends President William Ruto’s Leadership in the Ramadan Peace Process” issued on February 18.

The announcement, which was filled with adulation for Kenya’s president, said that Ruto’s cooperation with RSF fostered regional peace.

“The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) commends H.E. President William Ruto for his bold and unwavering commitment to regional peace and stability,” the notice purported.

“His recent engagement with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) marks a crucial first step in the diplomatic process aimed at fostering dialogue and de-escalating tensions as part of the Ramadhan Peace Process.”

This bogus announcement circulated on social media at a time when President Ruto was under fire for visiting a Sudanese rebel group that had expressed an interest in forming an alternative administration.

On Tuesday, February 18, RSF reportedly met at Nairobi’s Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) to discuss forming an alliance of political and armed factions to enhance its position in Sudan.

Despite the anticipation, no treaty was signed, and the group called it off at the last minute.

“We are in Kenya not to establish a government, nor are we here to govern from outside Sudan. When the time comes to form a government, we will return to Sudan, where the people will decide their future,” he said.

Sudan’s Foreign Affairs Minister was quick to express disappointment that Kenya was harboring the rebel group.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets the Kenyan government’s disregard for its obligations under international law by hosting the event of signing a so-called ‘political agreement’ between the terrorist Janjaweed militia responsible for ongoing acts of genocide in Sudan,” part of his statement on Tuesday read.

On Wednesday, the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, denied taking sides in the 22-month confrontation between the Sudanese government and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

“Kenya, therefore, reiterates its solidarity with the people of Sudan as they define their destiny and future political governance through inclusive dialogue.”

The statement continued: “Kenya is confident that the Sudanese people will find a quick solution to the current situation and in a manner that safeguards its security and that of the region.”

A follow-up press conference scheduled for Thursday afternoon has also been postponed.
