POLITICS: Jubilee Party Picks Matiang’i As Primary Candidate For 2027 Polls

Jubilee Party branch leaders have endorsed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i as their preferred presidential candidate.

According to party leaders in Nairobi, the endorsement puts Matiang’i in pole position to be the political party’s official flagbearer.

It claims that it is laying the groundwork for heated competition inside the Azimio alliance for the 2027 presidential nomination.

“We’ve settled on Matiangi as our candidate,” said Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni.

“Not to mean that he becomes eventual presidential candidate but a presidential candidate within the party who would then join others in coming up with one person who I believe as a coalition we will be able to back.”

The decision demonstrates the party’s confidence in Matiang’i’s leadership, which is based on his government experience and track record.

Jubilee’s statement comes months after the former CS expressed interest in becoming president.

Matiang’i signed a consulting deal with Canadian lobbying firm Dickens & Madson in July of last year to boost his bid for President in 2027.

According to documents obtained by Citizen Digital at the time, Matiang’i had already paid a down payment of $65,000 (Ksh.8.4 million) and would pay a retainer of $250,000 (Ksh.32.3 million) under the arrangement.

According to the secret document, the firm will “provide media and public relations services on behalf of the foreign principal’s (Matiang’i) goals and activities”.

It will also petition the Executive and/or Legislative branches of the US government to support his presidential campaign.

Prior to it, Matiang’i had kept his presidential ambitions under wraps since retiring from active politics in 2022.
