POLITICS: Martha Karua Announces Date For New Party Launch

People Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has set a date for the launch of her new political party, The People Liberation Party (PLP).

During a live radio broadcast on Monday, Karua said that planning for the event have been finalized and would take place this Thursday at the party’s headquarters in Nairobi.

“We will be unveiling our new party this Thursday, February 27, 2025, in Nairobi. The event will be held at our party headquarters. Everyone is invited,” she said.

The former Minister also described the event as historic for the country and the East African region.

“This will be an important moment of liberation of not only Kenya but also East Africa. My party’s theme is ‘Unite, Liberate.’ So unity is key to what we are doing” Karua added.

The lawmaker also backed the organization’s efforts to free Kenyans from the chains of oppression, which she described as the middle name of President William Ruto’s two-year tenure in office.

“We should not repeat the same mistake of electing a person who has crashed the car we are travelling in,” she said.

“We elected a person who crashed the car. It is what Ruto has done and his is time. We need to get new leadership and I’m ready to lead the country.”

Karua has stated that she is willing to support any opposition candidate in the 2027 presidential race as conversations about potential coalitions develop.

She argued that, while she remains a candidate, all opposition leaders must accept that Kenya’s interests take precedence over individual political ambitions.

“Let all candidates present themselves, and I have already presented myself,” she said.

“But we must all remember that Kenya is bigger than any one person. Campaign and seek support, but we must also be prepared to unite behind one flag bearer.”

Karua emphasized that she would be satisfied even if the opposition chose a different candidate to lead the charge in 2027.

“I must ask myself: is it a must that I push my candidacy at the expense of Kenya’s transformation?” she posed.

“It is better that we take collective responsibility in removing this illegitimate regime and usher in a new era, just like we did in 2002.”

Karua’s pledge made in February will be fulfilled during the unveiling.

The former MP made the commitment on Saturday, January 25, 2025, while hosting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at her Kimunye house in Kirinyaga County.

“You heard me telling my people not to introduce themselves with the name of the party you have known,” Karua announced.

“I have been the leader of Narc Kenya, but we have rebranded. We will be launching our brand soon, next month in February, and the name is People’s Liberation Party (PLP).”

She continued: “Na msifikirie tumeapply jana, we applied for those names in May last year, long before there were protests, but the process is just becoming complete.”
