SUDAN: 46 Dead In Sudan Army Cargo Plane Crash, Rescue Efforts Underway

A Sudanese military cargo plane crashed into a civilian suburb on the outskirts of Khartoum, killing at least 46 people, the army-aligned health ministry reported Wednesday.

The Antonov aircraft crashed on Tuesday night near Wadi Seidna air base, one of the army’s main military hubs in Omdurman, northwest of the city.

The army, which has been at war with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, stated that the plane crashed after takeoff, killing and injuring both military personnel and civilians.

Witnesses reported hearing a huge explosion and saw numerous damaged homes in the vicinity. The incident also resulted in power shortages in surrounding neighborhoods.

“Search efforts are still ongoing to find the remaining martyrs under the rubble,” the army-aligned health ministry said in a statement.

Pro-democracy groups had previously stated that ten persons were killed in the crash.

The government also stated that medical responders evacuated injured citizens, including children, to a nearby hospital.

A military source stated that the crash was caused by a technical fault.  They talked to AFP on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to communicate with the media.

The incident occurred a day after the RSF claimed responsibility for shooting down a Russian-made Ilyushin aircraft over Nyala, the capital of South Darfur.

According to the RSF, the plane was destroyed with the crew on board.

The occurrences escalate the nearly two-year confrontation between army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, RSF commander Mohamed Hamadan Daglo.

The two leaders, who were once partners, have become adversaries in a battle that has plunged Sudan into one of the biggest humanitarian disasters in recent memory, killing tens of thousands.

The conflict has decimated Khartoum and other major cities, displacing millions and destroying essential infrastructure.

Despite recent army successes in central Sudan and the capital, the battle shows little signs of ending.
