NAIROBI: City County’s Green Army Cleans Up, Fumigates Stima Plaza

On Saturday morning, the Nairobi County Government began a thorough clean-up and fumigation of Stima Plaza in Ngara, where waste had been dumped following a dispute between City Hall and Kenya Power.

A crew from the county’s Green Army was dispatched to Stima Plaza with fumigation machines, water boozers, and cleanup equipment to fumigate both inside and outside the structure.

They used water boozers with purified water to wash off the roadways near Kenya Power’s headquarters, Stima Plaza.

Nairobi County Public Health Chief Officer Tom Nyakaba, who led the exercise, stated that critical utilities such as water and sewer lines at Stima Plaza were entirely restored.

“It is our duty to ensure that people live and work in a clean environment. Today, we are here at Stima Plaza to assure occupants that their surroundings are safe and hygienic,” Nyakaba stated.

Nyakaba stated that the cleanup was intentionally planned for the weekend when foot traffic is lower and that it will be carried out in other parts of the city.

“This is part of an ongoing citywide exercise to clean up Nairobi, now extending into estates in a coordinated manner. Our teams are also deployed in various parts of the city today,” Nyakaba added.

The exercise follows the resolution of a long-standing dispute between the Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) and Kenya Power over unpaid wayleave fees totaling KSh 4.8 billion and the county’s outstanding energy bills.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said that he and Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi had agreed to collaborate on resolving the issue.

Sakaja handled the situation earlier this week, following a high-level intervention from the Head of Public Service.
