‘Compensate Protest Victims!’ – Raila Tells Ruto While Issuing New Demands

Raila Odinga, the leader of the ODM party, has repeated his plea for compensation for victims of political protests that began in 2023.

Raila stated during a consultative meeting with ODM leaders in Mombasa on Sunday, March 2, that persons who were injured during the Azimio protests in 2023 should receive compensation.

Similarly, Raila expanded his demands to victims of the Gen Z protests in 2024, emphasizing that youth who were hurt and families of those who died deserved financial compensation.

“The youth who sustained injuries and parents of those who died in 2023 during the Azimio protests and the Gen Z protests of last year have to be compensated,” Raila asserted.

“Those are the conditions we are setting. But the most important thing is that such incidents should not be happening in our country.”

In 2023, Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition organized a wave of statewide demonstrations.

The protests were primarily motivated by disagreements over the 2022 presidential election, with the rising expense of living serving as a secondary demand.

The protests, which lasted from March to August 2023, had a long-term severe impact on Kenya’s economy and individual lives, with reports stating that dozens died during the upheaval.

The administration ultimately met with Azimio through the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO), but talks have since stagnated due to internal disagreements within the Azimio alliance.

Raila’s latest words come amid a sea of uncertainty surrounding his next political move following his failed bid for African Union Chairperson.

Despite his amicable relationship with Kenya’s Kwanza government, he has been vocal about criticizing President William Ruto’s regime, ostensibly to maintain some degree of impartiality.

Raila criticized the Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza administration in January, during the height of the abductions, pushing the government to maintain truthfulness.

Meanwhile, a political tempest is brewing as Raila’s supporters continue to connect with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s team in a calculated attempt to defeat Ruto in the 2018 elections.

On Sunday, Gachagua revealed that despite his failed AUC candidacy, Raila’s influence remained huge, suggesting that the former Prime Minister held the key to Ruto’s future political success.

“The President’s current life support is Raila Odinga. If we switch it off, it will be the end,” Gachagua boldly stated.
