A new political alliance is forming between the Abagusii and Kuria communities ahead of the 2027 elections.

Although both communities speak Bantu, the Kuria live in Migori County, while the Abagusii are predominantly found in Kisii and Nyamira counties.

On Monday, elected and nominated leaders from Kisii and Nyamira counties met with some of their Kuria counterparts.

The meeting brought together Members of Parliament from the Senate and the National Assembly, representing the three counties.

Other leaders were chief executives, chairpersons and members of state corporations, regional vice-chancellors, senior civil servants, business leaders, and the Council of Elders.

James Matundura, Chairperson of the Kisii Council of Elders, and Kuria East MP Marwa Kitayama were also in attendance.

“The meeting was about the unity of our people and exploring areas of cooperation and engagement as one community,” said Matundura.

Some speculated that the conference attempted to bring together the two groups in support of President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The encounter came hours after Raila was heckled by a group of football fans while attending a Shabana jersey presentation at Gusii Stadium on Sunday.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba and National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro were among those who attended the early-morning gathering.

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, a prominent critic of President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration, was also present, as Abagusii leaders sought to unite the area.

Other attendees included Solicitor General Shadrack Mose and numerous MPs from both counties, including Steve Mogaka (West Mugirango), Zaheer Jhanda (Nyaribari Chache), Patrick Osero (Borabu), and Gloria Orwoba (Nominated).

Joash Maangi, Kenya’s Ambassador to Uganda, also took part in the meetings, which came amid a renewed attempt to strengthen communal unity ahead of the 2027 elections.

This is the second such gathering with Gusii leaders in a year, as they plan to unite the community in reaction to the fast-changing political landscape ahead of 2027.

According to a press release issued following the meeting, the discussions focused on the theme “Strengthening Regional Synergy for Development”.

It also stressed a common commitment to achieving long-term progress and fostering harmony among the Abagusii and Abakuria people.
