UDA Senator Blasts Raila, Demands An Apology From NMG Headline

Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei has criticized Nation Media Group over a headline in the Sunday Nation on March 16, accusing the media outlet of misquoting former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Cherargei took to social media on Sunday morning, claiming that the headline—Raila: I saved Ruto from military coup—was inaccurate and disrespectful to both Odinga and the Kenyan military.

He also condemned the media outlet for allegedly not being objective and requested an apology from the Kenya Defence Forces.

Furthermore, he urged Odinga to seek an apology or sue the NMG for allegedly misquoting him.

“Nation media either is becoming sensational or they are misquoting PM Rt. Odinga on the issue of a military coup against H.E. Ruto government,” Cherargei stated.

“PM Odinga must demand an apology or sue them for this non-objective/sensational reporting through brown envelope journalism.”

He added: “The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is the most disciplined, and non-partisan and doesn’t do politics; dragging them to such serious accusations is malicious, uncouth, barbaric, and primitive just for political expedience.”

Ending his passionate rant, the Senator urged opponents of the current administration to criticize it in ways other than dragging the KDF into “nefarious politics”.

Odinga’s comment, claiming to have saved President William Ruto during a military coup, came from an exclusive interview with a local newspaper and refers to the events of the June 2024 Gen Z rally.

According to Odinga, he urged the President against sending military forces to assist police officers in quelling the protests, which had evolved into an invasion of Parliament.

Raila claimed that calling in the military would have resulted in a forced transfer of power or a military coup.

“Ruto can be removed through the ballot but once soldiers get out of the barracks, they never go back,” he told NMG.

Reportedly, a close friend of Odinga had heard that Ruto was planning to send in the KDF which prompted him to call Ruto and warn him against taking that action.
