‘The Gov’t Is Awaiting A Response!’ – UDA MP Says Kenyan Facing Execution In Vietnam
Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia has stated that President William Ruto and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had contacted Vietnamese authorities over the upcoming execution of a Kenyan national.
Margaret Macharia Nduta faces the death penalty in Vietnam after being convicted of importing more than two kg of narcotics.
Her arrest occurred at Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, a major transportation center in the Asian nation.
Nduta’s case has since received widespread attention in Kenya, with residents pressing the government to intervene to prevent her execution.
With the Murang’a native’s execution scheduled for Sunday, March 16, Kururia expressed hope during a TikTok Live session, revealing that the government had made a last-ditch effort to save her.

“I can confirm that the president and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs contacted Vietnam yesterday and are waiting for feedback,” he said during the live session.
“The Vietnamese authorities have remained adamant. I’ve seen many people asking if the president is aware—yes, he is, and the government is awaiting a response.”
On Thursday, March 6, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court condemned Nduta to death, reinforcing the country’s tough stance on drug-related offenses.
According to court documents, Nduta was allegedly paid $1,300 (about KSh 167,000) to transport the contraband, which she categorically disputed in court, claiming that she believed she was delivering legitimate products.
One way the Kenyan government can act to save Nduta is by diplomatic intervention, in which the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Kenyan Embassy write to Vietnam, requesting clemency or a reduced sentence for the Kenyan.

The other option for Nduta is for her legal team to seek an appeal with Vietnam’s judicial system to have her death sentence reviewed.
This is doubtful, however, because additional evidence would be required to substantiate Nduta’s allegations.
President William Ruto might also make a direct appeal to Vietnam’s authorities on humanitarian grounds.
However, Kenya’s lack of a strong diplomatic presence in Vietnam may jeopardize the Murang’a native’s chances of avoiding the death penalty, particularly as time runs short.
