County Gov’t Fires 22 Employees, Dismissal Reason Withheld

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, through County Executive Committee Members (CECM), Education, Gender, Culture, and Social Services Mercy Njagi, has canceled the appointments of 22 Ward Education Bursary Committee members.

In a Gazette notice dated March 21, 2025, Njagi revealed that the members from seven wards had been fired effective immediately.

“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 7 of the Kiambu County Education Bursary Fund Act 2014, the County Executive Committee Member for Education revokes the appointment of the persons named in the first column of the schedule as members of Ward,” it stated.

“Education Bursary Committees of respective wards as specified in the third column of the Schedule.”

The notice, however, did not specify the cause for their dismissal.

Moses Ndung’u Kahura, Julius Ngotho Githiri, Luke Njenga Wamaitha, Ann Wajiru Ngige, and Veronicah Wangari represent Muguga Ward.

Ngoliba Ward members include Anthony Kamau, John Ngahu Waruimbo, Benard Njoroge Kariuki, John Maina Ngigi, and William Mwaura.

Gatuanyaga Ward’s members include Daniel Ngigi, Mercy Ruguru, Mercy Wanjiku, John Ndabi, and Tabitha Wangari.

Others include Ephantus Macharia Muriithi, a member of Kahawa Wendani Ward; Harun Karanja Thuo, a member of Kijabe Ward; Peter Mbugua Matiru and Daniel Kimani Wambui from Githiga Ward; and Mary Wambui Kamau, Joseph Karanja Kariuki, and Rose Wangari from Kinoo Ward.

This comes two months after the Migori Public Service Board terminated 181 county employees from various positions within the County Government.

In a Gazette Notice dated January 10, the Board revealed that the majority of the employees let go were from the Centre for International Health Education and Biosecurity (CIHEB) department.

The department’s contracts, which are funded by CDC-USAID, last until September 30 and are renewed upon request beginning October 1.

However, only 319 contracts were extended, with the remaining 91 terminated after a review of many characteristics.

This includes staff performance appraisals, appropriate academic documentation, registration and legitimate licenses, and disciplinary cases.

The county’s diversity, as well as gender parity issues, were considered.

“It was formally brought to the attention of the Board that CIHEB had budget cuts for Migori, meaning the human capital had to be downsized,” the statement declared.
