“I Will Be On The Ballot In 2027!” – Former Chief Justice Maraga Declares

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has announced his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election.

Maraga stated on Sunday in Kisii following a church service that he is willing to present himself for the top role, from which he will be able to launch change.

The former CJ, however, was quick to stress out that the electorate has the last say, dismissing the notion that he is anyone’s project.

“At the end of the day, it is the people who will decide. Just relax, wait and in due course you will make your mind yourself whether or not I’m a state project,” he said.

Maraga added: “We are praying that they (IEBC Selection Panel) select fit people; honest people to deliver a free and fair election.”

His remark comes as a group of top Kisii leaders, led by Senator Richard Onyonka, have stated that former Interior CS Fred Matiangi is the region’s chosen presidential candidate to face President William Ruto in the polls.

“We have decided that as a community we are also going to set up our own political party,” Onyonka said.

“We are going to produce our own candidate who will negotiate with the President and all the other people who are running for political office in this country and that candidate is none other than Fred Matiangi.”

Maraga recently accepted Gen Z’s backing to run for president, saying he is considering the topic with many stakeholders.

Maraga stated following a public lecture at Rongo University in Migori County on March 27 that the final decision would be made public.

“The request has been made; I’m discussing it with various stakeholders. I will make a final decision, and when the time comes, we will see whether or not we will do that,” he said.

The former Chief Justice noted that one should appreciate the significance of the contribution that one must make when elected to a post.

He stated that anyone seeking an elective position should choose to serve in accordance with the seat’s requirements.

Maraga stated that he is ready to serve, noting his experience in the Judiciary.

“I was head of one arm of government. There is no magic about being the head of another arm of government,” he said.

He claimed that he was well aware of the challenges that Kenyans face, with corruption being the most serious concern.

“The major problem in this country is corruption. Budgeted and institutional corruption that is not been solved effectively and as a result, the country is not able to have enough resources to deal with the issues that are there,” Maraga said.
