SOUTH SUDAN: Museveni Arrives In Juba For Talks With President Kiir

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni arrived in Juba on Thursday afternoon for meetings with his South Sudanese counterpart, Salva Kiir, as regional political tensions rise.

President Museveni’s visit aims to boost bilateral relations while also addressing South Sudan’s escalating situation.

The crisis has sparked international censure following First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar’s house imprisonment.

President Kiir greeted Museveni upon his arrival at Juba International Airport for what has been billed as a working visit.

The Ugandan leader later acknowledged his arrival via a post on X (previously Twitter).

“I look forward to our discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation between our two nations,” Museveni wrote.

Museveni has long been an important regional participant in peace efforts, having helped broker the 2018 peace accord that ended South Sudan’s bloody civil war.

However, opposition politicians have condemned Uganda’s recent military deployments in South Sudan, accusing Museveni of interfering with the country’s internal political affairs.

Museveni’s visit comes amid rising tension in South Sudan, following the incarceration of Vice President Riek Machar and his wife, Angelina Teny.

Their arrest sparked rioting in Rejaf, Wunaliet, and Upper Nile State.

The South Sudanese government accuses Machar of organizing an insurrection, which his allies firmly deny.

The United Nations, the African Union, and regional leaders all decried Machar’s house arrest.

They warned that the scenario could jeopardize years of fragile calm in the world’s youngest nation.

In reaction to escalating tensions, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir reportedly requested military aid from Uganda.

Uganda’s Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Oboth, informed parliament that on March 10, President Kiir made an urgent request for military assistance to avoid a serious security crisis.

“Following this request, the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) was deployed on a peace enforcement mission to stabilize the situation,” Oboth stated.

He also justified Uganda’s choice, claiming it is consistent with the country’s principles of patriotism, nationalism, and Pan-Africanism.

Museveni’s visit comes after a high-level expedition by Kenya’s Special Envoy to South Sudan, Raila Odinga, who met with President Kiir last week.
