GACHAGUA BOMBSHELL: I Defended State Programs For Just One Year

Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claims he only defended government projects for one year.

In an interview on Monday, the former DP stated that he was aware that the majority of the projects had proven unpopular among Kenyans.

The former DP stated that he confronted President William Ruto and informed him that he would no longer emphasize and defend the projects.

The President had accused Gachagua of neglecting to explain and defend government projects to the public and the media.

Ruto stated that this was one of the reasons the former DP was removed from the government.

However, Gachagua stated in an interview with KTN that after one year of defending state programs, he realized it was not working.

“The first year I used to go to the media and meet Kenyans to speak about government projects until I realised the affordable housing is a fraud, I stopped defending it,” he said.

“Even when the President tried to tell me to go to TV and defend the affordable housing project, I told him I will not go.”

He continued: “When I learned the university model was not working and it had become unpopular with students and parents, I refused to go. I refused to defend Adani and SHA.”

During a media event in Nyeri, Ruto stated that when he worked for former President Uhuru Kenyatta, his primary task was to market state projects.

“When I was deputy president, I went for TV interviews more than President Uhuru Kenyatta,” he said.

“When serving as deputy president, it’s your duty to profile government projects. Did you see Rigathi on any TV station talking about government programmes? No.”

He stated that nothing in government was passed without the approval of the deputy president, who also functioned as the chairman of development projects.

Gachagua’s impeachment was affirmed by the Senate in October 2024, making him Kenya’s first impeached deputy president in history.

Senators agreed to uphold at least five counts against Gachagua.
