DCI Launches Investigation Into Kariobangi North MCA’s Death

Joel Munuve, a Kariobangi North County Assembly Member, died unexpectedly, and his postmortem was postponed on Thursday to allow the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate.

The family of the MCA will have to wait longer to learn what killed their loved one.

The County legislator’s death has sparked widespread suspicion, with some indicating that he planned to file an impeachment motion against Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Danstan Omari, the family’s lawyer, acknowledged to the media that the postmortem has been postponed to allow for the involvement of the DCI and other interested parties.

Aside from the government pathologist and the DCI team, Omari stated that the family and the County Assembly of Nairobi might have their own pathologists oversee the case.

“We have confirmed that the DCI specialised unit will help the team of pathologists from the government side to do the postmortem. The family has an option to get their private pathologist,” Omari stated.

“The County Assembly also has an option for its own pathologist. The honourable is a member of the political class. Given that, the law does not stop anybody from appointing a pathologist,” he added.

The Kariobangi North MCA, elected as an independent candidate in a mostly party-controlled zone, served as a vigilant watchdog in an atmosphere that many saw as compromised.

His unexpected death on Tuesday sent shockwaves across the county assembly.

Munuve was reportedly on his way to town when he began to feel acute chest symptoms.

Despite attempts to bring him to a hospital on Kiambu Road in Nairobi, he died before receiving treatment.

On Wednesday, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja warned against getting caught up in the conjecture surrounding Munuve’s death.

Sakaja added that a full investigation to determine the cause of his sudden demise is underway.

While appearing on Citizen TV, Sakaja announced that the findings of an autopsy would be released today, as suspicion grew about the MCA’s mysterious death.

“Allow me to pass my deepest condolences to Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve, who passed away after collapsing at his home,” Sakaja noted.

“I do not know why you call it execution, as the autopsy results will be released tomorrow.”

He added: “Demise is a very serious thing, and it is not something we can play with or politicise. He was very firm and passionate about the issues he believed in.

“But what we want to allay this political speculation is a full investigation into what happened.”

Munuve was a vociferous critic of Sakaja, constantly questioning him about numerous county projects and leading the campaign for transparency.

His death occurred immediately after he requested information regarding Sakaja’s ‘Dishi na County’ school feeding scheme.
