EXPLAINER: Changes In UK’s New Laws For Migrant Workers, Students
The United Kingdom has implemented new, more stringent laws to limit the amount of foreign workers, students, and citizens entering the country.
In a press statement issued on Monday, May 1, United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared that the government is moving to degree-level education to ensure that workers entering the country are competent enough to accelerate the country’s economy.

Additionally, the prime minister stated that the UK will raise the bar on English requirements across all major immigration routes.
This will help to ensure that any foreigner who wants to work and live there can speak the language fluently.
According to Starmer, the UK is planning to increase the immigration skills tax, which firms pay when hiring foreign workers.
This will also help to ensure that firms prioritise British citizens during the hiring process.
The UK has also suspended foreign recruitment for social care visas until 2028; however, individuals already in the country will be able to extend their visas and swap countries.

The prime minister also indicated that the UK government intends to provide digital IDs and eVisas to all foreign citizens in order to help immigration enforcement officials identify illegal immigrants.
Furthermore, the United States plans to tighten the conditions that educational institutions must meet before sponsoring international students, ensuring that fewer foreign students study at the country’s universities.
Furthermore, a graduate’s stay in the country after graduation will be limited to 18 months.
On the other hand, the UK is anticipated to implement additional measures for those seeking refuge in the country.
These will include stronger visa controls, limitations, requirements, or inspection, particularly in cases where evidence of mistreatment is present.
“We will introduce new interventions for sponsors who are close to failing their sponsor duties, including placing them on an action plan designed to improve their compliance and imposing limits on the number of new international students they can recruit while they are subject to those plans,” he stated.

“Measures unveiled in the immigration white paper published today (Monday 12, May) will reshape our immigration system towards those who contribute most to economic growth, with higher skills standards for graduates and workers,” he stated.
The UK is also likely to revamp and overhaul the Foreign National Offenders (FNOs) deportation system to guarantee that the Home Office is aware of all foreign nationals who have been convicted within the country.
According to the Prime Minister, for one to acquire citizenship and rights to settle in the UK, a foreigner will be required to be in the country for 10 years, up from the initial 5.
“The government will publish further reforms to the asylum system and border security later this summer, building on measures in the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill currently progressing through Parliament,” it stated.
