Murkomen Heaps Blame On Gachagua Over Chaos At The Party Launch

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has commented on the turmoil that erupted during Rigathi Gachagua’s launch of his new political vehicle, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

Murkomen sought to transfer the blame to Gachagua’s camp, claiming that the National Police Service (NPS) was not alerted of any party launches.

The CS spoke at the Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Isiolo County on Thursday, May 15.

Murkomen maintained that Gachagua had the right to form his own political party.

However, the CS was sure that the previous DP did not follow proper protocols when it came to increasing security during the event at its headquarters in Lavington.

“As the national security team, we believe that the stability of our country is based on having a working democracy that allows everybody to exercise their political rights free from interference,” the CS said.

“Unfortunately, as I have enquired from the NPS, there is no indication that the National Police Service were notified of this meeting so that they can provide security.”

On Thursday, a scuffle broke out, and witnesses reported that several people dressed in civilian clothes fired rounds into the air, probably to disperse the gathering.

This incident occurred just moments after Gachagua and other senior DCP officials had left the event venue.

The incident also featured scenes of people fleeing for their lives, as well as some persons physically abusing party guests.

Journalists attending the rally were also targeted for intimidation.

Murkomen agreed that inquiries into the incident were underway, but he strongly hinted that the mayhem could have originated from Gachagua’s own camp.

“Preliminary investigations also indicate some of these supporters at this function were expecting to be paid an amount, and as a result of fighting for these resources, there was a melee which led to a stampede and some individuals in civilian clothes fired in the air,” Murkomen added.

“Investigations are going on to establish who they are and why they did what they did.”

Events attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua are becoming synonymous with turmoil.

The latest altercation comes weeks after a similar event occurred during a church service in Mwiki.

During the event, goons reportedly attempted to infiltrate the church, prompting Gachagua’s security detail to fire into the air.

The DCI later issued a statement criticizing the former DP for neglecting to notify authorities about his attendance at a local religious celebration.

Gachagua and his new party members are planning a larger launch ceremony on June 4, with interim deputy party head Cleophas Malala encouraging Kenyans to attend in large numbers.
