DETAILS: How Police Arrested Rose Njeri Over Finance Bill Website

Rose Njeri, a Kenyan website developer, has been under police arrest for two days.

Her offence? Developing an online application that allows Kenyans to reject a few items in the 2025 Finance Bill, which will be introduced in the National Assembly this month.

On Sunday, campaigners and family members gathered at the Pangani police station to urge the release of Njeri, who was denied bail on Saturday.

Her mother pleaded with the authorities to free Njeri, whose two children, ages 14 and three, are eager to welcome her home.

“She also has a medical condition. She keeps getting anaemia. So the cells are not a good place for her to be in,” said Njeri’s mother, Naomi Njoki.

Before Njeri’s family was barred from visiting, her aunt, Eva Waithera, spent time with her on Saturday and guided her through the Friday tragedy.

“They had sirens which alarmed the neighbours so much. There were three Subarus that had gone to arrest her,” Waithera narrated.

“They harassed her, took her phone by force and injured her arm. She works from home, they also took her laptop, items from her printer.”

Waithera said Njeri is currently in the dark, not understanding what is going on.

“She is worried. She is in fear. She does not know what to do, the people she should talk to or not.”

Njeri is represented by counsel from Kenya’s Law Society.
