Another Person Dead In Police Custody In Homa Bay

Police in Homa Bay County have initiated an inquiry into the inexplicable death of a 36-year-old man while in detention at the Kipasi Police Post in Mbita.

The man, known as Calvince Omondi Onditi, reportedly committed suicide on Sunday morning, June 15, barely hours after being arrested around midnight.

According to police, he used his trousers to hang himself in a holding room.

Omondi, a fisherman from Ndhuru Beach, was allegedly discovered trespassing in a goat corral before being detained by police when the area chief was notified.

Locals, family members, and leaders, notably Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo, have rejected the police account of events and demanded a thorough investigation.

Odhiambo, visibly angry, dismissed the suicide allegations as implausible, comparing the situation to that of Albert Ojwang.

Ojwang, a Homa Bay resident, died under dubious circumstances after being apprehended by police.

“These deaths in police cells cannot go on. Albert Ojwang’s case is still unresolved, and now they’ve killed Mr. Onditi in my constituency. Yet again, they’re pushing this stupid suicide narrative,” she stated.

“We were called and told that your brother is dead, and we were left in shock. How could this happen?” added a family member of Omondi.

“You informed us he was taken to Mbita just hours earlier, and then this is what we find. When we arrived there, we found him hanging.”

A post-mortem examination will be performed at Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital to ascertain the exact cause of death.

At the hospital, Chief Executive Officer Vincent Oduor confirmed that Calvin’s body showed evidence of trauma.

“We expect that an autopsy will be conducted on the body, but just from an initial overview, we have observed strangulation marks on the neck,” Oduor stated.

“The noose, made from long trousers, is still intact, and the tongue is also bitten. So far, there are no other significant marks on the body apart from these.”

Meanwhile, three civilians who were detained at the Central Police Station in Nairobi on the night of Ojwang’s death have been arrested in connection with the investigation.

According to the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), police personnel at the station instructed the three to torture Ojwang to death while he was in detention.

Although the circumstances for their first detention have not been revealed, they are alleged to have been released soon after the influencer died.

Following the IPOA’s investigation, they were re-arrested on Sunday and are currently being held separately at Kilimani, Muthangari, and Kileleshwa Police Stations.
