Atleast 13 People Killed, 30 Injured In Separate Road Accidents On Friday

Police say at least 13 people were killed in separate vehicle incidents around the country on Friday.

Thirty others were seriously injured in the accidents.

The victims were five motorcycle riders, two pillion passengers, two pedestrians, two passengers, a driver, and a pedal cyclist.

The injured included 13 riders, eight passengers, four pillion passengers, three drivers, a pedestrian, and a pedal cyclist.

There were 29 accidents reported on Friday, June 27 alone.

Traffic Commandant Fredrick Ochieng termed the incidents as unfortunate and stated that investigations were ongoing.

In one of the accidents, two passengers in a Toyota Hilux pickup died after colliding with a truck on Mombasa Highway in the Sultan Hamud district.

According to police, the truck driver was admitted to the hospital in bad condition following the Friday morning incident.

A rider died after colliding with another motorcycle on the Nkubu-Kionyo route in Meru County’s Kathithindene area.

A three-year-old child died in Vihiga’s Lunyerere region on the Kakamega-Kisumu road after a matatu tyre ruptured and crashed in a ditch.

Six other passengers were hurt in the same crash.

A pedal cyclist was killed in a crash involving a car and a motorcyclist on the Siaya-Nyadorera Road near Mulaha.

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a speeding car on the Bomet-Narok highway near Ololunga.

On Thika Highway, a saloon car driver died on the spot after his vehicle went off the road and crashed into a ditch.

In Maungu, Voi, a passenger in a fuel tanker died in a head-on collision involving the tanker and a lorry.

Three more people were hurt in the crash. According to officials, reckless overtaking, speeding, and intoxicated driving continue to be the primary causes of road accidents across the country.

These vices continue to claim lives despite the National Transport and Safety Authority’s (NTSA) ongoing public safety initiatives.

Mechanical failures caused by badly maintained vehicles, such as worn tires and malfunctioning brakes, have also been recognized as major contributors to the increasing frequency of accidents.

In addition to driver recklessness, poor road conditions such as potholes, imprecise signage, and insufficient lighting continue to make travel dangerous, especially at night.
