IEBC Announces Complete System Upgrade, Urges Kenyans To Verify Voter Info

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has advised registered voters to double-check their information ahead of the 2027 General Elections after modernizing the system.

In a notice sent on July 8, the commission stated that the voter verification portal outage, which had been reported on June 6, had already passed, and Kenyans may use the revised system.

“The Voter Verification Portal is back up and running! We appreciate your patience during the maintenance period. Check your voter details now: verify.iebc.or.ke.”

On July 6, the IEBC ignited internet debate by stating that it will be transitioning its systems to a new digital infrastructure only two years before the elections.

At the time, the commission did not specify how long the move would take or when Kenyans would be able to use the website again.

Kenyans also expressed worries about the legitimacy of the migration, while the commission remains vacant, leading to suspicion about who approved the movement.

However, the IEBC stated that the system update was “part of the ongoing migration to new infrastructure aimed at enhancing service delivery through system performance and security.”

The unsigned message then promised Kenyans that the registration information of the 22,120,458 registered voters as recorded during the 2022 General Election would be kept safe and secure.

Following the notification, Kenyans posted screenshots of an alert they received after attempting to verify their information.

While some acknowledged their information was correct, others noticed discrepancies.

Once, a voter received news that their year of birth did not match the one registered.

“No, really. You better tell us what this means!”

Another person who claimed to have voted at the same station for the past 20 years inquired as to what they had done to the register after receiving an alert notification.

“Voter with ID or passport number provided is not found; if registered, visit your IEBC constituency office,” it read.

In a more strange instance, another submitted an unsubstantiated claim that a buddy from Malindi, who had never registered to vote, discovered their name on the Nakuru voter registration list.

However, some others affirmed that their information was correct and promised to vote in the 2027 General Elections no matter what.

To ensure that their information is correct, users are requested to enter their national identity number and birth year.
