OUTRAGEOUS! National Treasury’s Pensions Office Exposed For Rampant Bribery

Four National Treasury Pensions Department workers are facing legal consequences after being implicated in a bribery syndicate targeting members of the public.

On Thursday, July 17, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) revealed the arrests, which came after the commission’s two-month undercover operation.

According to the EACC, the operation was prompted by several complaints from members of the public who reported being frustrated by the Pensions Department whenever they sought assistance.

Preliminary investigations revealed a well-coordinated criminal network within the department, with officers allegedly extorting money from the public in exchange for faster services.

The suspects under inquiry include two senior pension officers, a chief clerical officer, and an intern.

The EACC also found that members of the public were allegedly asked to pay money using a mobile money paybill account in exchange for quicker processing of their requests.

Investigations discovered that a total of Ksh10.5 million had been transacted using the paybill, which was registered in the intern’s mother’s name.

“In the last two years, a total of Kes10,523,044 has been transacted through the paybill account, with the above suspects receiving various amounts,” the EACC revealed in its report.

“Further investigation reveals that the said paybill account is registered in the name of Mr Muhando’s mother.”

The four suspects have subsequently been processed at the Integrity Centre Police Station and are anticipated to be sent to Kilimani Police Station for additional investigation.

This is the latest example of the EACC cracking down on wrongdoing within a government agency, and the new technique of sting operations appears to be paying off.

In April, two Kakamega Civil Registration Department personnel were detained for allegedly soliciting and accepting payments from applicants seeking civil registration paperwork.

The couple, a Civil Registrar stationed at the Kakamega Huduma Centre and a Civil Registration Officer, are accused of soliciting bribes to speed up service delivery, similar to the suspects from the National Treasury.

In another incident in March, EACC officials caught a government official working with the Lands Control Board red-handed after accepting a Ksh70,000 bribe.
