HELB Issues Fresh Update For Loan Applicants Without IDs
The Higher Education Loans Board has revealed how candidates applying for student loans as minors can include their national identity numbers in the application page.
The board issued an update on Monday, July 21, outlining a step-by-step method for students who used their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination index number instead of their ID number to finally add the ID once they received it.
“Just got your ID after applying for the HELB Loan using your KCSE index number? Now’s the time to update your ID number! Follow these easy steps to keep your account information current,” the notice read.
First, applicants must enter into their Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal accounts, which they have already registered using their KCSE index numbers.

After logging in, they will be asked to update their ID.
As a result, before selecting validate, individuals must enter their ID numbers and first names exactly as they appear on their National ID card.
The applicants will then receive a notification that their ID has been updated, prompting them to click on the register button to finish the procedure.
“Do not create a new account. Simply update the one you opened using your index number with your National ID details,” HELB warned.

This comes just a few weeks after HELB launched the application portal for the 2025/2026 academic year loans and scholarships for undergraduate and TVET students, aimed at candidates who took their KCSE in 2024.
