KURA Issues Way Forward For Ngong Road Footbridges After Public Outcry
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has finally bowed to considerable public pressure, announcing plans to construct footbridges along the major Ngong Road–Karen corridor.
The decision comes after an internet campaign by dissatisfied individuals who have repeatedly questioned the omission of critical safety elements during the road’s recent development.
According to the worried netizens, road development is good, but road safety is better, highlighting the necessity for the footbridge.
The pedestrians had disclosed that navigating the road without the footbridge was dangerous for them.
“Where are footbridges along Ngong Road to Karen? The first thing you should construct before building any road should be footbridges,” one concerned Kenyan had shared on a post by Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
KeNHA, on the other hand, emphasized that the road in question was under KURA’s control, and they would be better able to address the situation.
“Thank you for reaching out to KeNHA,” KeNHA responded and tagged KURA.
Plans are currently underway to install footbridges as part of efforts to enhance pedestrian safety along the section.

“The Authority seeks to clarify that the aforementioned road section is under the purview of KURA. Kindly reach out to them for any further assistance.”
KURA responded quickly to the post, assuring the concerned residents that the footbridges would be built for their safety.
They did not, however, offer building timelines.

“Plans are currently underway to install footbridges as part of efforts to enhance pedestrian safety along the section,” KURA said.
Ngong Road is one of Nairobi’s busiest thoroughfares, and it has long been a hazard for pedestrians, particularly schoolchildren and residents crossing to access matatus, businesses, and schools.
Despite its twin carriage extension and refurbishment, the initial design lacked safe pedestrian crossings or footbridges, requiring thousands of commuters to run across fast-moving traffic every day.
KURA also provided updates on the newly installed Limuru Road pedestrian crossings, which include continuous NMT routes except in limited areas.
