Ruto Appoints Famed Former Red Cross Chief To KEY Health Institution
President William Ruto has implemented significant adjustments to key health institutions as part of a larger campaign to improve service delivery in the health sector.
In a gazette notification dated Friday, July 25, the Head of State named Samier Muravvej as the non-executive chairperson of the Board of the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council.
Following his appointment, Samier will take over the new post immediately and will lead the council for the next three years.

At the same time, the President appointed Paul Ndungu as non-executive chairperson of the Kenya National Public Health Institute for a three-year term beginning Friday, July 25, 2025.
Kariuki succeeds David Ndegwa Nyokabi, whose appointment as chairperson of the Health Institute was overturned. Ruto named Nyokabi to the role in August 2023.
“I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Paul Ndung’u Kariuki to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenya National Public Health Institute,” Ruto announced.
Ruto also appointed Frederick Namenya Were as Chairperson of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council for a three-year term.
During the announcement, the President canceled the appointment of Stanley Khainga, who was set to take up the role in March 2023.

The aforementioned developments occur against the backdrop of Abbas Gullet’s appointment as non-executive Chairperson of the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) Board.
The former head of the Red Cross was appointed by President Ruto on Friday, July 22, and will serve in the new role for three years.
“I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Abbas Gullet to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Kenyatta National Hospital, for three years, with effect from the 25th July, 2025. The appointment of Samier Muravvej (Dr.) is revoked,” reads part of the gazette notice.

Gullet is widely known for his role as the Kenya Red Cross Chief Executive Officer, a role he held for nearly two decades before his latest appointment to government.
