[DETAILS] Resolutions From The Ruto, Mnangagwa DRC Peace Talks In Nairobi

The African Union (AU) will now lead the effort to achieve long-term peace and unity in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

President William Ruto said that the Nairobi and Luanda-led peace initiatives have been terminated and would be handled by the AUC.

Ruto was addressing a meeting of the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) co-chairs at State House in Nairobi.

The commission has been tasked with assistance from the Washington and Doha peace accords.

“To this end, we call for the merger of the Nairobi and Luanda peace processes to address the instability in the DRC,” said Ruto.

“We appreciate the commitment made by both EACRF and SADC peacekeeping missions,” President Emmerson Mnangagwa added.

This comes a day after the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office, which is monitoring the fighting in Eastern DRC, reported that an M23 rebel raid on farmers and other civilians killed 169 people on July 9, 2025.

The council agreed to formally cease the Uhuru-led Nairobi peace initiatives as well as the Luanda peace initiative spearheaded by Angolan President and AU Chair Joao Lourenço.

The African Union has been tasked with finding a long-term peace solution in the war-torn Eastern DRC.

The summit also agreed that the AUC would centralise and coordinate all immediate mobilisation, including humanitarian assistance.

The AUC has also been entrusted with convening a virtual extraordinary joint EAC-SADC summit within seven days to communicate the outcomes of the Nairobi conference, which was held at State House in Nairobi.

Nearly 3,000 people have been slain in the conflict between M23 insurgents and the DRC national army for control of the mineral-rich North Kivu province.
