British High Commissioner Set To Leave Kenya After TWO Years

Neil Wigan, the British High Commissioner to Kenya, has announced his upcoming departure at the end of August.

Wigan, who took on the role in 2023, will leave to become Director General of Strategy and Delivery at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in London.

While announcing the news, he reflected on his two-year stint, describing it as fulfilling for both countries.

“I am extremely sorry to be leaving Kenya after a whirlwind two years,” he stated.

“The Kenya-UK partnership has gone from strength to strength – whether in trade, investment, technology, innovation or cultural links, benefitting both countries and peoples.”

He also emphasized some of the important partnerships the two countries have formed in the two years he has been in office, such as the signing of the new Kenya–UK Strategic Partnership.

Others he noted included the UK’s training of Kenyan marines and important infrastructure projects such as Nairobi Railway City.

He relished the opportunity to observe Kenya and its residents’ potential firsthand.

This includes attending a Maasai elders gathering and seeing how UK assistance is assisting in the establishment of women-led companies in Wajir.

“From the tea plantations of Bomet County to the Silicon Savannah, I’ve no doubt that Kenya’s future is bright,” Wigan stated.

“I have visited most of Kenya’s counties – I am sorry to not have visited them all.”

“Kenya and the UK are going far together, and it has been incredibly rewarding to be part of that journey.  Asanteni sana na kwaherini,” he concluded, bidding farewell to Kenyans.

On April 19, the British government announced that Wigan would be the next High Commissioner to Kenya, succeeding Jane Marriott, whose term expired at the end of July 2023.

Marriott, who had already served a four-year term, was reassigned to another Diplomatic Service position.

Her appointment made history, since she was the first woman to be appointed High Commissioner to Kenya.
