Gachagua’s Motorcade Teargassed, Causes Chaos in Narok Campaigns

On Monday, November 24, after police tried to disrupt Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua’s campaigns by tear-gassing him, chaos broke out in Narok town.

Reports surfaced earlier on Monday that Gachagua was being prevented from entering Narok town by a roadblock and a strong police presence.

But Gachagua managed to enter the town while wearing a helmet, and just five minutes into his address, the police opened fire and used tear gas to scatter the gathering.

A tear gas canister was thrown into Gachagua’s motorcade when he was speaking to locals who were yelling anti-government slogans.

This compelled the former Deputy President and his convoy to flee for safety.

Gachagua wanted to make the most of the final day of campaigning before the November 27 by-elections, driving his convoy to Narok to support MCA candidate Douglas Masikonde.

Notably, Gachagua seems to have caught wind of the heavy police presence as he entered the campaign path, wearing a black helmet for protection.

No injuries were recorded during the commotion, with the youngsters there appearing prepared to confront anti-riot police in order to listen to Gachagua.

Following the altercation, Gachagua published a lengthy statement stating that the overwhelming police presence in Narok Town was intended to purposefully sabotage his campaign.

“Clear instructions had been issued by this cowardly and brutal regime to block me and my entourage from accessing Narok Town to campaign for the DCP Candidate for Narok Ward Hon. Douglas Masikonde,” Gachagua alleged.

“The people, a people united, are stronger than all roadblocks, than all bullets, than all stones, than all teargas you have in store and high seas and than any dictator in the world.”

Adding, “No amount of blood money, police brutality or police excessive force will cow or intimidate the people of the Republic of Kenya.”

The Narok Town Ward race will be a political duel between the incumbent United Democratic Alliance, whose candidate is Robert Kanyinge Ole Kudate, and Gachagua’s DCP party.

Aside from Narok Town, the UDA and opposition are vying for votes in other sensitive areas, including Mbeere North, where the parliamentary race is expected to go down to the wire.
