Maraga Breaks Down Ruto’s Economic Record, Cites Steep Borrowing

On Monday, April 24, 2025, former Chief Justice David Maraga accused President William Ruto of increasing the national debt while delivering little in return for years of massive borrowing.

Maraga claimed in an X post that Kenyans are struggling, despite being promised that the economy is improving.

He questioned the president’s financial management. He emphasized that taxpayers bear the burden of decisions over which they have no influence.

Maraga claimed that the country had borrowed at least 40% of its national budget since President William Ruto assumed office.

He stated that the government debt has increased from Ksh8.6 trillion to Ksh12 trillion in three years.

He contended that the rapid accumulation of debt makes future generations vulnerable. Maraga also rejected suggestions that Kenya’s economy is stabilizing.

He referenced an official statement from the administration saying that foreign reserves are now worth USD 12 billion.

He emphasized that, despite the claimed reserves, ordinary Kenyans do not feel any respite.

Maraga presented the problem as one of honesty and accountability. He believes Kenyans deserve leaders who invest locally to provide jobs and opportunities.

“We can continue pretending that President Ruto understands our struggles. Or we can choose an honest leadership that treats every tax shilling as if it’s the last we have,” stated Maraga

Maraga, a 2027 presidential contender for the United Green Movement, continues to portray himself as a people-oriented candidate.

He has adopted public crowdfunding as a component of his political strategy. He also encouraged citizens to demand leadership that values public funds.
