“15,000 Pre-Marked Ballot Papers Already In Mbeere North!” – Kalonzo Claims

With just hours until the highly anticipated November 27 by-elections, the United Opposition has issued new incendiary charges about an alleged rigging conspiracy by the ruling party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, and Eugene Wamalwa, leader of the DAP-K party, held a press conference on Wednesday evening, November 26.

The trio alleged that there was an intricate plan to pack vote boxes, notably in UDA-Opposition battlegrounds such as Malava, Magarini, and Mbeere North.

According to the United Opposition, the government was intending to dispatch goons dressed as election agents at voting sites to instigate a fracas.

During which other government-allied officials would pack ballot boxes with pre-marked papers.

The leaders also alleged that there was credible evidence that thousands of unsealed voting papers had made their way to competitive regions, swinging votes against them.

“We have credible information that the serialisation of 820,000 printed ballots was not done correctly, creating a loophole for ballot stuffing,” Kalonzo claimed during the presser in Nairobi.

“30,000 remarked ballots have been dispatched to Magarini, Malava and Mbeere North.”

Opposition notably identified Mbeere North, stating 15,000 pre-marked voting papers had been delivered to the seat, while a further 10,000 had gone to Malava, which is all but a two-horse fight between government and opposition.

According to the opposition, the stuffing operation involved a brief disturbance by state-sponsored goons, followed by corrupted IEBC workers stuffing ballot boxes with papers bearing the names of government-preferred candidates.

The opposition also implicated IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan in the allegations, claiming he personally orchestrated the rigging plan.

“Violence is being prepared to be used as a tool to cripple this by-election,” Kalonzo added.

“We therefore demand that the IEBC rise to the moment and confront the challenges facing the by-election.”

Adding, “The commission must assure all Kenyans it is not entangled with broad-based masters.”

Gachagua indicated that the opposition would send operatives to all battlegrounds to oversee the by-election process.

The former DP went a step further, advising the agents to thoroughly vet the IEBC’s actions, leaving nothing to chance during the voting process.

Furthermore, Gachagua urged the IEBC to prevent all armed plainclothes officials and agents from entering polling locations with firearms, claiming that the government intended to scare their team.

“We want to allow IEBC to not allow officers into the polling stations. No agents should carry weapons inside the stations unless they are uniformed,” Gachagua warned.

“We have asked our agents not to allow any voting until all agents are frisked. Once that happens, voting should go on.”

The opposition’s latest allegations now set a precedent for what promises to be an intense by-election.

Their remarks come hours after the National Police Service (NPS) warned politicians against interfering with the Thursday polls.

IEBC Chairperson, Ethokon Edong, also warned candidates participating in the upcoming by-elections against showing up with truckloads of supporters or goons at the tallying stations.
