Gov’t Vandalizes Nyeri’s 30,000 Homes’ Water Project With Armed Police

The Water Resources Authority (WRA), supported by gun-wielding police officers, allegedly destroyed the Kamiruri water intake, which serves over 30,000 homes.

Government personnel allegedly sabotaged the water meters, broke the main exit, and channeled the water back into the river, thereby cutting off the supply to thousands of homes that rely on the system on a daily basis.

According to residents, the early-morning operation occurred without warning, leaving towns stunned.

During an interview on December 7, Joseph Kagiri, Chairman of Kieni Constituency Water Community Projects, criticized the vandalism.

“This is economic sabotage against thousands of households that rely on these water systems,” the chairman complained.

According to Kagiri, community members were taken aback by the sight of heavily armed officers providing protection for an operation that directly injured the residents the state is tasked with protecting.

The Mutitu Water Project covers the counties of Laikipia, Nyeri, and Nyandarua.

This indicates that the damage has hampered home use, irrigation, livestock watering, and local enterprises that relied on a consistent water supply.

The move has also generated severe concerns about the legality and procedure of the officers’ activities, as there was no public participation, consultation, or court order.

The destruction occurred despite a November 2025 High Court ruling declaring the Mutitu Water Project and its infrastructure are common property.

In response to the actions of the WRA officials and police, the chairman vowed to mobilize the community and lawyers to take legal action against the perpetrators.

“This is an act of hooliganism and vandalism, and we will take it to a court of law,” Kagiri concluded.
