Kirinyaga MP Speaks After Sudden Withdrawal of Rice Importation Case

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina is now urging the Kenyan parliament to act in response to the abrupt withdrawal of a petition calling for an end to rice imports.

In a statement issued on Thursday, December 11, the congressman chastised the Farmers Party for abruptly withdrawing the petition that aimed to halt the import of 500 tons of rice into the country.

MP Maina, a close colleague of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, questioned the reason for the withdrawal, accusing the Farmers Party of playing politics with the livelihoods of thousands of farmers.

While condemning the action as unfortunate, inappropriate, and a betrayal, the legislator requested the National Assembly to investigate the problem and offer protection for the farmers who will be affected by it.

The petition, initially supported by various interested parties, obtained conservatory orders from the High Court, temporarily halting significant rice imports.

However, with the withdrawal, the orders that halted rice importation have been lifted, allowing the claimed cargoes to access the Kenyan market within weeks.

According to the outspoken lawmaker, the petition’s sudden withdrawal will have a severe impact on local production and prices, as well as undermine years of industrious Kenyans’ investment.

“Farmers Party is fully aware that their decision to withdraw the case in its entirety will cause those protective orders to lapse, so what is their motivation?” she questioned.

“Kenyan farmers deserve defenders who do not wobble, waiver or withdraw when pressure mounts. This withdrawal is not just a legal manoeuvre; it is an economic betrayal,” Maina added.

In her statement, the legislator attributed the sudden withdrawal of the petition to a political game, further describing it as a legal manoeuvre aimed at advantaging only a few people.
