Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o has applauded President William Ruto’s decision to rename the Talanta Stadium after the late Raila Amolo Odinga.

Governor Nyong’o said it was a historic and appropriate tribute to one of Kenya’s most significant leaders.

In a press statement made on Friday, December 12, Nyong’o stated that the decision to rename the 60,000-seat stadium as Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium honours Raila’s long struggle for democracy, justice, and constitutional reform.

He addressed on behalf of the Kisumu residents and the larger Lake Region Economic Bloc.

Nyong’o commended President Ruto for accepting the amendment, stating that it demonstrated national leadership and respect for Kenya’s heroes across party lines.

He said that Raila’s contribution in the Second Liberation, the push for the 2010 Constitution, and his strong support for devolution helped establish modern Kenya and deserved lasting national recognition.

“This decision is a historical act and a deeply fitting tribute to a leader whose life was dedicated to the fight for democracy, justice, and the soul of Kenya,” Nyong’o said.

“The Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga’s struggle for the Second Liberation, the 2010 Constitution, and his lifelong advocacy for devolution are foundational pillars of modern Kenya.”

The Kisumu governor noted that the stadium would serve not only as a sports arena, but also as a reminder of Raila’s principles.

He said future generations of athletes and artists would be inspired by a leader who, in his opinion, always prioritized the country.

President Ruto revealed the decision on Friday, December 12, 2025, following an appeal from Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja during the Jamhuri Day celebrations.

Ruto said he had listened to calls from leaders and Kenyans across the political divide and confirmed that the renaming would take effect once construction is complete.
