Gachagua, Gumo Clash Over Wetang’ula’s Account Of Jirongo’s Death
Opposition leaders, led by Rigathi Gachagua of the Democracy for the Citizens party, have urged National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to provide an explanation of what happened when he met the late Cyrus Jirongo hours before his death.
Speaking to the media after visiting Jirongo’s residence in Nairobi on December 16, the leaders called for full responsibility and a prompt probe into the former minister’s death.
Gachagua questioned the silence of the leaders and individuals who were with Cyrus Jirongo in Karen on the night he died.
“Kenyans are asking, who were the last people to be seen with Cyrus Jirongo?” Gachagua posed.

“Why are they quiet? Speaker Wetang’ula should have given a very good account of what his plans were and where he was going.”
The DCP leader also compared Cyrus Jirongo’s death to that of J.M. Kariuki, who he claims was executed in front of his relatives.
Kariuki’s death in March 1975 is commonly seen as a political assassination; yet, the case remains officially unsolved, and no one has ever been convicted of the crime.
A parliamentary inquiry implicated senior government and police officials, but no further action was taken.
Gachagua’s concerns were addressed by the funeral planning committee chairperson, former Westlands MP Fred Gumo, during the same media event.

Gumo reported that on Sunday, December 14, the National Assembly Speaker paid a visit to Jirongo’s residence and explained what had happened.
According to Gumo, Wetang’ula stated that he was with Jirongo in Karen on December 13 until 9:30 p.m., when the Speaker excused himself from the meeting, leaving Jirongo with two other acquaintances whom Gumo did not identify.
Gumo confirmed that an autopsy will be performed on Wednesday, December 17, to ascertain the cause of Jirongo’s death.

During the interviews, the leaders called for a prompt probe into Jirongo’s death, urging President Ruto to instruct the DCI to deliver answers as soon as possible.
They also wanted accounts from passengers on the bus that crashed into Jirongo’s car, resulting in his death.
In a statement earlier in the day, the DCI revealed that a preliminary investigation determined that the accident occurred on the night of December 13 at Karai on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.
This comes as social media users speculate that the scene was tampered with.
