Kenya’s University Lecturer To Referee AFCON Match Today
Peter Waweru Kamaku, a university lecturer, will be at the heart of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 action on Friday, December 26, after being named to officiate a Group A match in Morocco.
Kamaku is a senior lecturer at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) with a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Pure Mathematics.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Kamaku as one of three Kenyan referees to supervise the Group-stage match between Angola and Zimbabwe, which will take place in Marrakech, Morocco.
The match is scheduled for Friday, December 26, at 3:30pm at the Stade de Marrakech stadium in Marrakech.

This will be Kamaku’s second high-profile tournament since his debut in 2019, when CAF chose him to officiate the last group D match between Namibia and the Ivory Coast.
Waweru was chosen as one of 26 centre referees at AFCON 2023. He officiated Morocco’s group stage match against the DRC.
Today, Kamaku will serve as the centre referee, with fellow Kenyans Gilbert Cheruiyot as the first assistant referee and Stephen Yiembe as the second assistant referee.
Morocco’s Mustapha Kechchaf has been appointed as the fourth official.
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) desk will be handled by Hamza El Fariq of Morocco, while Abdulaziz Yasir of Sudan will act as the Assistant VAR official.

The 2025 AFCON kicked off on Sunday, 21 December 2025, marking the beginning of the 35th edition of the international football tournament.
The tournament, which features 24 national teams from across the continent, is scheduled to run for nearly a month, with the final match expected to be held on January 18, 2026.
The matches are being staged in stadiums located in Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez.
Later today, in the second Group B match between Egypt and South Africa, Kenyan referee Engineer Dickens Mimisa will serve as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
