EXCLUSIVE: Gas-Powered Ship From Singapore Arrives In Kenya’s Mombasa Port

The Port of Mombasa has announced the arrival of a vessel fueled entirely by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the first of its kind to dock at the country’s principal seaport.

According to the authorities, the vessel Höegh Australis arrived at the port late on Friday, December 26, after an 11-day cruise from Singapore.

The ship’s captain, Edgar Paul Buhia, stated that the vessel runs on 98% liquefied natural gas.

Meanwhile, the remaining 2% is covered by typical bunker fuel, which is largely used for engine start-up and other operating purposes.

The captain claims that LNG greatly cuts emissions when compared to traditional fossil fuel-powered vessels.

According to KPA, these types of ships reduce sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon dioxide emissions significantly.

“The vessel was piloted into port by Kenya Ports Authority pilot Captain Suleiman Bakari, who represented the KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto, during the call,” KPA stated.

“During the call, a traditional first-call plaque and certificate were issued to the vessel’s master, Captain Edgar Paul P. Buhia, to commemorate the ship’s inaugural visit to the port,” it added.

The 16-deck vessel has a cargo capacity of 9000 units, which is comparable to new-generation pure car and truck carrier designs, according to the authority.

“LNG-powered ships are increasingly deployed as the global maritime industry responds to stricter environmental rules under the International Maritime Organization,” KPA said.

However, despite the potential for LNG-powered vessels to clean up maritime transport, the authority identifies several hurdles, including fuel availability, infrastructure development, and methane emissions.

According to KPA, the vessel’s landing illustrates the port’s rising capacity to accommodate next-generation, low-emission vessels as global commerce accelerates.

In a notice issued on December 17, KPA stated that the port will handle 53 boats by the new year, 29 of which will be container ships.
