Gladys Wanga Breaks Silence On Claims To Deputize Ruto In 2027

Gladys Wanga, Governor of Homabay, has spoken for the first time about her intention to deputise President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.

Wanga announced in an interview aired on Friday, December 30, that she would seek re-election as governor of Homabay in 2027.

She indicated that she was not interested in any other top post besides her current role as ODM party chairperson.

“What I can say about the issue is that the people of Homabay elected me as their governor and it is my wish that if the locals agree, they should re-elect me as their governor,” Wanga stated.

“That’s my wish, and I am asking them to re-elect me in 2027. I am already a national leader as the chairperson of ODM. I am content with that.

“People can talk, and you cannot stop them from airing their views. But it’s only God that has plans for everyone,” she added.

Her words come amid mounting speculation that she will be President Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 elections.

This comes after ODM leader Oburu Odinga stated that the party’s lowest position in any coalition negotiations would be that of its running mate.

On Monday, December 29, the Kirinyaga women representative claimed that Wanga was after the deputy president position in 2027, which is why she was attacking former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Wanga said that 2026 would be a watershed moment for ODM, with the party discussing future coalition possibilities.

This came after Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir urged the party leader to start talks with Ruto’s UDA about forming a formal coalition ahead of the 2027 election.

The governor emphasized that the party had a broad-based agreement with Ruto. However, she made it plain that they are only in the arrangement until 2027, and not beyond.

“We did not elect this government. Going to 2027, we must have a coalition agreement that must be negotiated,” she noted.

“In the course of 2026, ODM will have its national delegates’ convention because this decision is for the entire party and not for an individual.”

He added, “We cannot just say that because we have the memorandum of understanding (MOU), we should support Ruto beyond 2027. No. We must negotiate properly.”

The possibilities of President Ruto dropping his current deputy and picking Wanga as the potential deputy in 2027  intensified following the formation of the broad-based government.

While no official appointments or agreements have been announced, the possibility has been driven by a significant factor.

This follows President Ruto’s promise that in future elections, the UDA party ticket might include a woman as a running mate.

ODM also demanded the running mate position in case it goes into any coalition.

Additionally, by picking Wanga, analysts say it will secure the Nyanza voting bloc, a traditionally ODM stronghold, especially after facing challenges in the Mount Kenya region, which greatly supported him in 2022.
