Kenyan Passport Regains Strength In Latest 2026 Rankings

Kenya’s passport has made a comeback on the global arena, rising five places in the 2017 Passport Index to rank 68th.

The increase comes after months of decline; the Kenyan passport plummeted to 73rd rank in October 2025, and holders could only visit 70 countries visa-free or with a visa on arrival.

According to the 2026 rating, Kenyan passport holders can now travel to 69 places without a visa, indicating a modest but significant improvement in global mobility following a long period of decline.

The Henley Passport Index compared 199 passports for 227 destinations using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the world’s largest and most comprehensive travel database.

The index is updated monthly to reflect real-time changes in visa laws, new diplomatic agreements, and changing international relations, giving it an accurate indicator of a country’s travel freedom.

Kenya’s passport has undergone a rollercoaster ride over the last two decades, reaching the mid-50s in worldwide rankings in the early 2000s before dropping to a historic low of 77th in 2021.

This January comeback indicates an increasing trend.

Analysts explain the recent rise in part to global mobility realignments, in which even minor changes in other nations’ visa policies reorder rankings, boosting Kenya’s comparative advantage.

Kenya now ranks among Africa’s top ten strongest passports, after only Seychelles, Mauritius, and South Africa, but ahead of many of its East African counterparts.

Interestingly, Kenya scored a perfect 100% on the Henley Openness Index, meaning it welcomes visitors from every country in the world without requiring them to obtain a visa beforehand.
