Gov’t Launches Major Infrastructure Upgrades at JKIA, Moi Airports
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced plans for significant infrastructure renovations and modernisation at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Moi International Airport (MIA), and Kisumu International Airport.
This move is intended to improve passenger experience and operational efficiency.
Official tender announcements indicate that the authority is looking for offers from enterprises to carry out a variety of projects.
This involves building, slope stabilization, and the installation of commercial facilities such as restaurants and digital solutions at key airports throughout the country.
JKIA’s renovations will include the design, fit-out, operation, and management of several restaurant locations.

It will feature fast service restaurants, African cuisine, and cafes in terminals 1A, 1D, and 2.
Terminal 1A primarily services foreign flights, including global links for national carriers and a number of other international airlines.
Domestic flights in Kenya use Terminal 1D, which is designated to this purpose.
Terminal 2 serves low-cost carriers and regional airlines, offering domestic and regional international destinations.
Meanwhile, several bidders seek to build a dedicated airport taxi application to improve ground transportation services for passengers.
This will increase safety for passengers seeking cab services both within and outside of the JKIA.
At the same time, Moi International Airport (MIA) in Mombasa will see ground and slope stabilisation works undertaken, garden restaurant development, and mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning projects.
In the Western region, Kisumu International Airport (KIA) is set to benefit from its slope stabilisation and reclamation works and the provision of baggage wrapping services, aimed at improving operational efficiency and passenger service.

Further, beyond structural upgrades, the KAA will also implement digital and operational improvements, including an electronic document and records management system (EDRMS) for more streamlined airport administration for all the airports.
Other regional airports, including Ukunda, Malindi, Wilson, Nanyuki, and Isiolo, will also undergo targeted projects such as advertising media development, ground handling services, and taxi services, signalling a nationwide push to modernise Kenya’s airport infrastructure, according to the government’s development plans.
This comes at a time when the government intends to build a new airport in Kenya to match global peers.
President William Ruto revealed in January that the construction of a new world-class airport will begin in April this year as part of the government’s strategy to improve the country’s national infrastructure.
