EXPLAINER: How Uhuru, Gachagua Plan To Work Together

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has acknowledged the formation of a partnership between its leader, Rigathi Gachagua, and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In an interview with TV47 on Wednesday, February 3, the party’s deputy leader, Cleophas Malala, stated that the two leaders were already working together behind the scenes and that it was only a matter of time before the public announcement.

“There is a handshake between Rigathi Gachagua and Uhuru Kenyatta. They are already working together. It is just a matter of time before the official announcement is made,” Malala said.

Malala attributed the alleged cooperation to recent changes in the Jubilee Party.

He stated that former Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni was ordered to tone down his criticism of Gachagua in order to facilitate the political coalition.

“That is why you saw Jeremiah Kioni, who was always abusing Gachagua, being told to calm down, and he was later replaced. We want to work together,” he added.

According to Malala, the forming of an alliance aims to shield Kenyans from President William Ruto’s administration.

“I want to assure Kenyans that Rigathi Gachagua and Uhuru Kenyatta are working together to protect Kenyans from Ruto’s regime,” Malala affirmed.

As of now, neither the former Deputy President nor Uhuru Kenyatta have publicly confirmed the existence of a handshake or political partnership.

Uhuru’s Response

Nonetheless, DCP’s statement comes only a week after Uhuru Kenyatta dismissed accusations that he directed Rigathi Gachagua to organize a large political summit of Mt Kenya elites.

In a statement sent by Kenyatta’s office on January 29, Uhuru stated that claims linking him to the planned mobilisation were ‘false and deceptive’.

He urged the public not to share unconfirmed information attributed to him.

The former Head of State insisted that the posts circulated online were unauthorised and did not reflect Uhuru’s views or position on Mt Kenya politics or any ongoing political processes.

“The Office of the 4th President, Uhuru Kenyatta, has observed with concern the deliberate circulation of false and misleading content on social media platforms,” the statement read in part.

“We urge all citizens to exercise vigilance, verify information before sharing, and avoid amplifying falsehoods that erode public trust,” it added.

“The dignity of the Office of the 4th President of the Republic of Kenya remains paramount.”
