“Exercise Utmost Caution!” – DCI Warns Kenyans Over First-Time Meetings
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued a caution to Kenyans, advising them to prioritize their safety when meeting strangers for the first time.
On Saturday, February 14, DCI investigators disclosed a troubling trend that stems from first-time interactions, particularly on online platforms, in which naive persons are misled into perilous situations under the guise of friendship or romance.
In a Valentine’s Day-themed message, the detectives reminded the public that while love and new connections are encouraged, they must always be cautious of their personal safety.
“As Cupid’s arrows fly across digital skies, we gently remind you that online connections can spark beautiful beginnings, but they also conceal shadows,” the DCI wrote.

The DCI officers stressed that first-time meetings, particularly those planned through social media and online dating apps, should be addressed with caution.
Members of the public were also advised to use well-lit, crowded public venues for their first interactions rather than isolated or private situations.
“The DCI extends to you and your cherished ones heartfelt wishes of pure joy, serene moments, and unbreakable bonds wrapped in warmth,” the detectives warned.
“Exercise utmost caution when meeting someone from dating apps or social platforms for the first time.”
The authorities also advised people to keep trusted friends and family informed of their movements, including the meeting location and time.
“Choose well-lit public places bustling with people for initial encounters; share your plans and location with trusted friends or family; trust your instincts if anything feels amiss, step away without hesitation,” they added.

As Kenyans commemorate moments of affection and friendship today, the DCI urged the public to collaborate in nurturing not only meaningful relationships but also a safe environment.
The caution comes amid increased concerns about occurrences involving contact with strangers, some of which have resulted in theft, assault, and even murder.
In several reported cases across the country, suspects have in the past used false identities and deceptive ways to gain trust before orchestrating attacks that even led to fatal injuries and murders.
For instance, between 2024 and 2025, the country recorded a surge in brutal killings, which mainly involved young women, meeting individuals online and being murdered in short-term rentals.
