“He Has Not Been Expelled!” – Oburu Odinga Clarifies On Sifuna Stance

Oburu Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has refuted reports that the party’s struggling secretary general, Edwin Sifuna, was chased out.

Speaking at a church service at Shalom Miracle Church in Makupa, Mombasa, on Sunday, February 15, Oburu explained that Sifuna was simply removed from his post as secretary general but remained an active member of ODM.

He went on to say that Sifuna was simply punished for party indiscipline, stressing that ODM must have discipline and that those who do not follow the rules must be chastised.

He also reinforced the position of the interim secretary general, Busia women’s representative Catherine Omanyo.

“We have our SG Catherine Omanyo and the other SG, the party said he should be out a little because of indiscipline, but we have not thrown him out of the party,” Oburu stated.

“He is the court’s SG and Omanyo is the SG of the party and we are not going to go back.”

“There must be some example of discipline. Somebody must feel some little pain of being disciplined so that the party can continue to be united,” he noted.

“The party cannot be based on fear; nobody was bigger than the party,” he added.

Oburu underlined that the ODM constitution is explicit and that anyone who goes against the party, regardless of rank, will face disciplinary action.

He went on to say that even he, as the party leader, can be disciplined if he goes against the party’s policy.

His words came amid rising tensions inside the ODM party following Edwin Sifuna’s expulsion as secretary general by the party’s national executive committee, as resolved.

However, Sifuna went to court to prevent his ouster, and the high court gave him a reserved order prohibiting the party from publishing his removal until his case was heard and decided.

Regarding the rising tensions in ODM, the party leader maintained that the party remained united and would not allow external forces that were trying to divide it.

As Oburu and other party officials were in Mombasa, the other faction, led by Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, camped in Kitengela for their Linda Wananchi tour.
