“I Was Not Crying, I Was Sober!” – Ruto PS Responds To Her Viral TikTok Video

Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni clarified a viral social media video where she appears emotional, emphasising that she was not crying but merely reflecting.

Speaking on Monday, March 9, during an interview on TV47, the PS dismissed claims that she broke down, explaining that people often express emotions and reflections in different ways.

Yes, I know there is a video that went viral, purportedly showing me crying. Do I look like someone who can easily break down?” Muthoni posed.

We all meditate differently, and we all have one reflection, and I can tell you for a fact, having worked in public health, I have too many reflections to do every day,” she added.

According to Muthoni, the pressure of managing Kenya’s health sector often requires moments of reflection, adding that her reflections are shaped by the many challenges she encounters daily.

The PS noted that her recent video showing her almost breaking down was just a reflection of the recent tragic events in the country, including seeing people swept away by floods.

Beyond the devastating floods, Muthoni also expressed concern over persistent disease outbreaks and the immense responsibility of protecting the health of millions of Kenyans.

The other day  I saw people being swept by the floods, and having looked at where we have come from and how much we have done and then I am glaring at outbreaks of diseases; these are things that keep me awake at night,” she stated.

Despite the speculation, Muthoni insisted that she had not cried in a long time, noting that the TikTok video was her personal way of connecting with the realities facing the country.

This is just my way of connecting with people. Saturday was a really sad day, and that video was posted on Saturday. I am very sober and very okay; I was not crying, I was just reflecting,” the PS insisted.

Muthoni’s clarification comes on the backdrop of public concerns over the video, which she posted on TikTok on Saturday, March 7, showing her seemingly emotional.

The TikTok video, which has since attracted more than 158,000 impressions, 5,308 likes and over 400 comments, was accompanied by an inspirational gospel song.
