HOMABAY: Governor Wanga Nominates New Deputy After Magwanga Resignation
Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga has nominated Danish Otieno Onyango as her deputy governor following the resignation of Joseph Oyugi Magwanga in late February.
In a statement dated March 16, Wanga nominated Onyango, who was serving as the County Executive Committee member for Roads and Public Works.
Wanga said Onyango would still serve in his initial position and would also assume his new role as the county deputy boss after approval by the county assembly.
“Pursuant to a vacancy in the office of the deputy governor in Homabay following the resignation by the previous holder, and in compliance with the county government act, I do hereby nominate Danish Otieno Onyango to serve as the deputy governor, subject to approval by the county assembly,” Wanga said in a statement.
The governor cited Onyango’s extensive experience in public service, spanning over two decades, as a key factor in her decision.
According to Wanga, Onyango has overseen the expansion of Homa Bay’s road network, including the opening of 736 kilometres of new roads in the 2024/25 financial year.
This is alongside routine maintenance of 538 kilometres and rehabilitation of 116 kilometres of access roads.
The projects have improved connectivity to schools, health facilities, markets and beaches.

“I am confident he will ably serve the County in this new DG role based on his exemplary performance since 2022,” Wanga added.
He hails from Kabondo Kasipul constituency and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, Political Science, and Public Administration from the University of Nairobi, as well as a Master of Arts in Development Studies.
Upon his approval by the county assembly, he will take the position that fell vacant in late February following the resignation of Oyugi Magwanga.
Before his resignation, Magwanga had previously lamented about being sidelined in key decision-making processes within the county administration.
