Former Senator, Educationalist Is Dead

Former Kirinyaga Senator Daniel Karaba has passed away.

The Senator’s death was confirmed by Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, who described him as a distinguished leader whose life was marked by service to his people. 

We have lost a distinguished son of Kirinyaga, Hon. Daniel Karaba, whose life was defined by service, humility, and a deep commitment to education and leadership,” stated Waiguru.

At the time of this publication, Karaba’s cause of death was yet to be made public, although preliminary reports indicate he passed away after a short illness. 

“I join the people of Kirinyaga and the nation in mourning his loss, and extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those he impacted. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” stated Governor Waiguru.

During his time in politics, Karaba served as Kirinyaga’s first Senator and former MP.

He first entered politics in 2002, winning the Kirinyaga Central Parliamentary seat on a National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) ticket. 

He served in the Senate between 2013 and 2017, where he played a key role in parliamentary oversight and was actively involved in education-related matters.

Notably, Karaba chaired parliamentary education committees, drawing on his background as a school principal.

He influenced education policy, supported school expansion, and delivered 1,860 speeches, focusing on Early Childhood Development (ECD) and school safety.

One of his last public appearances was on March 1, with Party Leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) and United Opposition Principal Martha Wangari Karua.

This was during the burial of his youngest brother, Stephen Kimaru Njoroge, in Kaharo Village, Kirinyaga County.

On social media, Kirinyaga residents mourned him as an education champion who brought radical changes to the education sector in the country.

One user wrote, “Mwalimu Karaba was a great teacher, union champion and political leader.”

His supporters and residents of Kirinyaga County alike have expressed their condolences, keeping him and his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Many hailed his commitment to empowering others through education and public service, which stands as a shining example to all.
