Alarm As Senate Reveals Possible Poisonous Fish In The Kenyan Market
The Senate Committee on National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations has ordered the immediate halt of all fishing activities at Lake Nakuru amid claims of disappearances of fishermen.
The orders were issued on Tuesday, March 24, by Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo, chair of the Committee, during a meeting with the Kenya Wildlife Service and other stakeholders.
The meeting followed a petition alleging abuses by KWS officers at Lake Nakuru National Park.
“Any fishing at Lake Nakuru must stop immediately, KWS must ensure that there is no fishing taking place at the Lake,” Dullo stated, issuing the orders.
The orders also followed KWS’s claims that the fish being removed from the lake were unfit for consumption, and warned the public, especially in Nairobi, against eating fish from Lake Nakuru.
“This is a description of a national health crisis in the country. People are taking fish that have been declared a unfit for consumption. We are killing kenyans,” said KWS Director General Erustus Kanga.
The Senate emphasised that if the KWS’s claim is something to go by, then all fishing activities at the lake ought to have been stopped long ago.
“If, based on the submission here, that Nakuru fish were declared unfit for human consumption, why are people being allowed to fish and supply the condemned fish to markets, this must stop today,” Dullo added.
The petition, filed in the Senate, sought the House’s intervention, investigation of the reported disappearances, and recommendations.
The petitioners are seeking a thorough probe into the alleged incidents, particularly any involvement of KWS officers, alongside measures to strengthen community engagement and safeguard human rights.
They also called for a review of KWS policies and operational protocols to curb abuse of power and enhance accountability.

Additionally, the should foster dialogue among the agency, local fishermen, and other stakeholders to resolve disputes over fishing rights.
The petitioners told the Committee that residents dependent on fishing for their livelihoods have faced intimidation and violence from KWS officers.
However, KWS denied any involvement in the forced disappearance, torture, and intimidation of fishermen or anyone in Lake Nakuru.
“KWS remains open to engaging with any specific, documented complaints that may be submitted through the appropriate channels,” Kanga added.
“We have not received any formal reports, complaints, or administrative notifications of forced disappearances of fishermen at Lake Nakuru National Park.”
