IEBC Under Fire Over Illegal Voter Transfer, Registration Irregularities
Members of the National Assembly have piled pressure on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to respond to claims of irregular voter transfer.
This come after it was found that some voters, especially in Nairobi, were finding themselves transferred to polling stations they did not voluntarily transfer to.
The concerns were raised by Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje, who alleged that some registered voters in Nairobi were transferred to Garissa County without their knowledge.
According to Mwenje, during the ongoing enhanced continuous voter registration and verification exercise, several Nairobi voters discovered their polling stations had been moved to locations outside the capital, particularly in Garissa County.
“Concerns have been raised that during the ongoing exercise, several voters within Nairobi County have allegedly been assigned polling stations outside Nairobi, with some reflected as registered voters in Garissa County,” he stated.
He further stated that the concerns raised serious concerns about the integrity of IEBC to conduct a free and fair election in the coming general elections in 2027.
“This development raises concerns regarding the integrity, accuracy and credibility in the voter register,” he added.
If the claims are confirmed, the MP warned, the situation could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
“Such irregularity, if confirmed have the potential to undermine the confidence in the electoral process.”
His concerns come after some voters took to social media alleging that they were finding themselves at polling stations they did not transfer to, calling on the IEBC to respond.

Mwenje further urged the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee to summon IEBC officials to clarify the veracity of the allegations, the number of affected voters, and the corrective measures being taken to address any anomalies in the voter register.

In response, Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula directed the relevant committee to investigate the matter and table its findings when Parliament resumes from recess.
“What Mwenje is asking for is an illegal transfer, not a legal transfer. Expect a response within the first week upon resumption,” Wetang’ula ruled.
The concerns come amid intensified continuous voter registration and verification exercise in the country, with the commission recording over 1.3 million new voters after 21 days.
The exercise is expected to end in six days, and the IEBC has dismissed any proposals to extend the exercise for other days, with the commission targeting 6 million new voters before the 2027 General Election.
