SHA Introduces MAJOR Changes On Benefits Package

The government has announced major changes to the Social Health Authority (SHA) benefits package, including free maternity services at Level 2 and Level 3 hospitals and an increase in cancer treatment support to up to Ksh800,000.

The changes were announced on Monday, May 11, following directives by President William Ruto during the 2025 State of the Nation Address and resolutions adopted during the 12th Ordinary Session of the National and County Governments Coordinating Summit.

Under the new changes, all registered SHA beneficiaries will now access free delivery services at Level 2 and Level 3 primary healthcare facilities on a walk-in, walk-out basis.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced that facilities will be reimbursed Ksh10,000 for every normal delivery and essential newborn care case, while caesarean section procedures and newborn care will attract Ksh30,000 reimbursement.

The maternity package will cover aftercare for mothers and newborns, immunisation, diagnostic laboratory tests, blood administration, postnatal family planning and medication during admission and after discharge.

In the cancer treatment package, the annual benefits coverage has been increased from Ksh550,000 to Ksh800,000, while the allocation under the Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund for chronic illnesses has risen from Ksh150,000 to Ksh400,000.

Patients undergoing cancer treatment will also benefit from enhanced consultation and diagnostic services.

The government also announced that oncology consultations involving oncologists, mental health specialists and palliative care experts will now be covered up to Ksh2,500 per visit.
