The search expedition has brought together Kenya Red Cross aquadivers, Beach Management Unit (BMU) officials, and local fishing boats, with the humanitarian organization verifying that all teams are actively participating in the response operation.
KRC noted that its aqua divers are collaborating with local responders and fishermen while the operation continues in the area.
Lamu County has recorded at least six marine-related accidents so far in 2026 alone, contributing to dozens of boats capsizing in the region over the last several years.

The local Fisheries and Sea Transport Department (FSTD) notes that marine mishaps are a recurring issue, historically averaging 12 to 15 deaths annually across the archipelago’s deep-sea channels.
This year alone, six marine accidents have already occurred, causing multiple fatalities and missing persons, including a collision at Kilindi Channel on May 9 and today’s Kwa Bruno Channel capsize.
Last year, five major marine accidents were reported, resulting in ten deaths, when severe rough weather capsized watercraft near Mutuni.
In 2024, a lower volume of fatal incidents was recorded due to a temporarily improved local community rescue deployment, while 2021 marked an extreme spike of twelve boats capsizing, killing seven fishermen in a single week.
