President William Ruto will leave the country on Monday, June 15, for Evian, France, where he will represent Africa at the G7 Leaders Summit.

The travel was confirmed by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed, who stated that French President Emmanuel Macron had asked President Ruto to attend the high-level summit of the world’s top economies.

“President William Ruto departs later tonight for Evian, France, at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron to participate in the G7 Leaders’ Summit, where he will represent Africa and advance the continent’s priorities before the world’s leading economies,” Hussein said in a statement on June 15.

Ruto is anticipated to attend the summit and speak with various world leaders about critical global issues such as economic growth, trade, climate action, security, and technological progress.

Macron will be joined by US President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Also expected are Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Japan’s Shigeru Ishiba, Britain’s Keir Starmer, and European Union (EU) chiefs António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen.

For President Ruto, this summit is a chance to push Africa’s agenda, building on the resolutions from last month’s Africa Forward Summit, which Kenya jointly hosted with France, that laid out a shared continental plan covering economic transformation, financial reforms, climate action and digital growth.

Additionally, he will address Africa’s position on artificial intelligence governance, calling for equitable access to emerging technologies and increased investment in digital infrastructure, data centres and skills development across the continent.

This trip comes after a series of heavy criticism from the public, media, and opposition leaders regarding the frequency and high cost of his trips during a difficult economic period for the country, with the last trips involving state visits to Finland and South Africa, where a series of agreements were made.

In response, President Ruto has defended his frequent international travels by stating he is Kenya’s ‘chief diplomat’ and ‘chief agent,’ not a tourist, with his ‘many trips’ intended to bring development into the country.
