Former MP, Wiper Presidential Secretariat and Campaign Is Dead
Former EALA MP and Head of the Wiper Party Presidential Secretariat and Campaign, Abubakar Zein Abubakar, has died.
Abubakar passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2026, in Avenue Hospital in Nairobi. The cause of his death has not been disclosed at the time of publishing.
He served as a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly between 2012 and 2022 and played a significant role within the Wiper Party, where he managed the Presidential Secretariat and Campaign team.

Tributes have been flooding in the news of his death, with ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale characterizing him as a modest leader.
“Rest in peace, Mheshimiwa Abubakar Zein. A good man has rested. A man of few words with a great smile,” Etale said.
Zein was appointed to the Wiper party leadership by Kalonzo Musyoka in December 2024 and has been vocal about governance and policy matters until his death.
He served as Kenya’s representative in the 3rd East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) from 2012 to 2017 and was also a fierce human rights defender.

Even so, as at the time of publishing, neither the Wiper party nor its leader Kalonzo Musyoka had issued a statement on the passing of the official.
Earlier on Thursday, just hours before news of his death emerged, the Kenya Human Rights Commission had appealed to the public to help raise funds for Abubakar’s medical treatment.
KHRC revealed that he was in critical condition after undergoing surgery.

The lobby group announced a fundraising drive dubbed ‘Solidarity for Zein’, saying the former legislator remained hospitalised following the operation and required financial support to meet mounting medical expenses.
It had also organised an afternoon of art, music and spoken word at the Alliance Française Nairobi on Saturday, July 11, to raise funds for him and his family.
His death, announced just hours after the appeal was made public, has cast a sombre mood over the planned solidarity event, with tributes continuing to pour in from political leaders, human rights activists and friends.
